Guaranteed minimum income rises to BGN 75

The guaranteed minimum income will rise to BGN 75 from 1 January 2018, the government decided. The new amount is BGN 10 above its current level. The aim is to improve the social protection system of the most vulnerable groups.

The guaranteed minimum income is used as the basis to determine the access limits for assistance and the amount of social benefits in order to provide a minimum income to satisfy the basic living needs of individuals according to their age, marital status, health, income and assets.

Its increase will raise by 15% the amount of monthly social integration benefits paid under the Integration of Persons with Disabilities Act. There will be an increase also in the monthly and one-off allowances under the Social Assistance Act and the benefits stipulated in the Child Protection Act.

Another positive effect of the increase in the guaranteed minimum income would be the extension of the scope of the people supported by monthly social benefits, targeted heating allowances and targeted rent subsidies for municipal housing.
