Over the past two years Bulgaria has made significant progress in the field of gender equality. In 2015, Bulgaria ranked 25th in the EU by this indicator, while in 2017 it moved 10 positions up and occupied 15th place. This was shown in the third edition of the Gender Equality Index at EU level. The study was presented by Virginia Langbak, director of the European Institute for Gender Equality, at a meeting of the National Council on Gender Equality held today at the National Assembly.
The index represents a significant achievement of the European Institute for Gender Equality, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Policy Rositsa Dimitrova said at the opening of the forum. We have a long-lasting and fruitful partnership with the institute, which is a catalyst for Bulgaria's progress of 10 positions up in two years, she added.
The EU gender equality index is a unique statistical tool to measure progress on equality in six core domains - Work, Money, Knowledge, Time, Power and Health - which have been evaluated for Member States between 1 for total inequality and 100 for full equality.
For 2013, Bulgaria's index was 37.0, rising to 38.1 by 2015, and now to 58.0 in 2017, versus an EU average of 66.2. Our country achieved the highest results in the Health domain - 76.4, and the lowest in the Time domain - 42.7. In the Work domain, the index is 68.6, in the Money domain - 61.9, in the Knowledge domain - 53.3 and in the Power domain - 56.0.
